Sustainability with impact
Route every container ship with reefers on total voyage cost: propulsion plus the power that keeps the cargo cold. Delivered through ABB Ability™ Vessel Routing.
Blueroutes is reefer-aware vessel routing for container lines and reefer carriers. Weather routing optimises propulsion but leaves out the reefer load: about one in five tonnes of fuel on a container ship with reefers1, rising and falling with the air temperature along the route. Blueroutes prices both and returns the cheapest route inside the ship’s weather limits.
Great circle, historical average and optimised, each with fuel cost and ETA
Frozen, chilled and fresh reefer counts are priced alongside the main-engine fuel curve
Every route respects the wave and wind limits set for the ship
All three routes reach the bridge with a route brief and daily waypoints

Past crossings are re-run against the weather each ship actually met
Every candidate route is scored on propulsion plus reefers, not distance alone
The replay shows the reefer count at which routing starts to pay
If the savings are there you will see them; if not, you will know that too

90 of 91 replayed crossings used less fuel: 2.7% to 32.8% per voyage2
34% more saving than weather routing alone, for about 1% extra distance2
Runs on AIS, weather data and a reefer model (1B+ IoT records, >97% accuracy)
Integrated with ABB Ability™ Vessel Routing, and open to any routing platform
1 Sustainable-Ships (2026). 2 Replay results are fuel identified, not billed. 91 crossings: 29 on a Europe–South America reefer service (H1 2026) and 62 North Atlantic voyages (2026); +34% and ~1% come from the 29-crossing set. ABB Ability™ is a trademark of ABB.
