Pôle Mer Méditerranée and Pôle Mer Bretagne Atlantique, France’s two main maritime innovation clusters, have both awarded Blueroutes by Greensee their label. Both reviews cited the same result: 3–7% less fuel on reefer ships, from routing that counts the energy the refrigerated containers use.
Who the Pôles Mer are
Pôle Mer Méditerranée and Pôle Mer Bretagne Atlantique bring together maritime companies, bluetech startups, research institutions and public bodies to develop and support collaborative R&D and innovation projects. Their label follows a formal review of a project’s innovation, economic impact and team, under a process recognised by the French State and the Regions since 2005.
What the reviews found
Pôle Mer Méditerranée’s steering committee reviewed Blueroutes on 24 September 2026, and Pôle Mer Bretagne Atlantique’s board on 25 September. Both awarded the label. Both cited a 3–7% reduction in ship fuel, and both pointed to the same gap: the energy used by refrigerated containers is missing from today’s routing tools.
Pôle Mer Bretagne Atlantique also tied the project directly to the rules now putting a price on shipping emissions: FuelEU Maritime, the EU ETS for shipping and the IMO’s 2030 targets. For an operator, every tonne of fuel not burned is bunker not bought and, on EU voyages, allowances not surrendered.
What it means for a fleet’s fuel bill
Around 20% of a reefer ship’s fuel goes into refrigeration rather than propulsion (Sustainable-Ships, 2026). Conventional weather routing treats that share as fixed. It is not: air and sea temperature, humidity and solar load along the route change how hard the reefers work. Blueroutes routes the ship on total energy, propulsion plus reefers, and delivers the route through ABB Ability™ Vessel Routing as one optimised waypoint a day. No hardware, no change to the ship.
On six reefer vessels over six months, that identified $1.8M of fuel. The method and voyage-by-voyage results are in 90 of 91 Crossings Ahead on Fuel.
Every efficiency vendor claims savings. The question for a CFO is whose numbers hold up when someone with no stake in them looks.
Blueroutes is also one of two finalists in the Mobility category of the Solar Impulse Foundation’s Pioneer Awards 2026. Read that story.
We thank both Pôles for their support.
See it on your own fleet
Send us vessel names or IMO numbers and we will replay your own voyages: the fuel in dollars and tonnes, voyage by voyage, including the break-even reefer count below which rerouting isn’t worth doing. If the savings are there, you will see them. If they are not, you will know that too.
