Greensee and ABB are one of two finalists in the Mobility category of the Solar Impulse Foundation’s Pioneer Awards 2026, with Blueroutes, reefer-aware vessel routing delivered through ABB Ability™ Vessel Routing. On real voyages replayed against AIS tracks, Blueroutes came out ahead on fuel in 90 of 91 crossings and identified $1.8M of fuel on six reefer ships in six months.
What the Pioneer Awards recognise
The Pioneer Awards recognise efficient solutions that have already been put to work by a real client. Each award goes to a pair: the solution and the organisation that adopted it. An independent jury of more than 55 experts scores every case study on two things: the impact it has already delivered, and how readily it can be replicated elsewhere. Entries compete in five categories: Agrifood & Natural Environment, Building & Construction, Industrial Processes & Consumer Goods, Mobility, and Utilities.
The final: 26 November, Lausanne
The final takes place at the Solar Impulse Foundation’s Pioneers Forum on 26 November 2026 at IMD in Lausanne, in front of more than 400 innovators, investors and corporate leaders. Each finalist presents its case study live on the main stage, and the winners are announced the same day. The Foundation named the ten finalists on 6 October: see its announcement.
This is the Foundation’s second recognition of Blueroutes this year. In July 2026, Blueroutes was awarded the Solar Impulse Efficient Solution label, which is given only to solutions that independent experts assess as both clean and profitable.
Why reefer energy is a fuel-bill problem
Around 20% of a reefer ship’s fuel goes into refrigeration rather than propulsion (Sustainable-Ships, 2026). Conventional weather routing optimises the hull against wind, waves and current, and treats that share as fixed. It is not. Air and sea temperature, humidity and solar load along the route change how hard the reefers work. Blueroutes routes the ship on total energy, propulsion plus reefers, using a model trained on more than a billion reefer IoT records.
Replayed against real AIS tracks and held to the ships’ own schedules:
- 90 of 91 crossings came out ahead on fuel, across a Europe–South America reefer service and a second operator’s North Atlantic voyages.
- 2.7% to 32.8% less fuel per voyage.
- 34% more saving than weather routing alone on the 29 reefer-service crossings.
- $1.8M of fuel identified on six reefer vessels over six months.
The route reaches the bridge through ABB Ability™ Vessel Routing, as one optimised waypoint a day inside a service many fleets already use. No hardware, no change to the ship. The full method and voyage-by-voyage results are in 90 of 91 Crossings Ahead on Fuel.
Blueroutes was also awarded the Pôle Mer label in September by both of France’s main maritime innovation clusters. Read that story.
Meet us in Lausanne
Greensee and ABB will present the Blueroutes case study on the main stage of the Pioneers Forum on 26 November. If you run reefer services, finance fleets or invest in maritime decarbonisation and will be there, book a meeting with us through the event app. For the result on the day, follow Greensee on LinkedIn.
If you can’t be there, send us vessel names or IMO numbers and we will replay your own voyages. You will see the fuel in dollars and tonnes, voyage by voyage, including the break-even reefer count below which rerouting isn’t worth doing. If the savings are there, you will see them. If they are not, you will know that too.
